How to record a game on your phone
Use one phone on the sideline. One person taps the team's stats as the play happens. After the game, the totals are already saved.
StatsMapp does this on iPhone, iPad and Android. The sports are AFL (shown in the app as Football), basketball, netball, soccer (football), rugby league and cricket.
Two jobs. Do not mix them up.
- The coach records the team's stats. Roster names do not need a player account. A volunteer can do the tapping for the coach. They still record team totals, not each player's stats.
- A player records their own player stats, in their own account. Player accounts are for ages 13 and over. Parental consent covers ages 13–14. Coaches can run teams of any age, because team stats do not need player accounts.
This page starts with AFL, then netball. The other sports use the same Teams steps. Pick that sport on the home screen.
Before you leave home
- Install StatsMapp on the phone you will use. Open the app and tap Sign Up, or Log In if you already have an account.
- Coach: switch to Teams mode. Create the team once. Pick the sport, name the team, and tap Save team. You can keep more than one team.
- Add the roster names. Share the join code only if a player (13+) wants their own account linked. You do not need accounts to record team totals.
- Charge the phone. Take a power bank if the ground is cold or the game is long.
- At training, open a match and tap a stat, then undo it, so the screen is familiar. The live how-to shows + and − on the sport screen. Basic and Advanced sit on that same screen.
Agree who taps. That person does not also run the clock, the canteen, or the team talk.
AFL: record the game on your phone
The app calls this sport Football. On the home screen, choose Football.
Before the bounce
- In Teams mode, open your AFL team.
- Check the roster names are there. You set these up once.
- If you schedule matches, set the fixture so the opponent and date are ready. The how-to calls this Set fixtures.
- Stand where you can see the whole ground, away from the huddle.
During the match
- Open the match when play starts.
- Tap the team stat as it happens. The site names goals and marks for football, plus other team plays for that sport. Use + to add and − to undo a miss-tap. Do not wait for quarter time to catch up.
- Record team totals only. Do not try to keep a separate tally for every player on this screen. That is not the coach's job in StatsMapp.
- If you lose your place, keep going. A full game with a few missed taps is more useful than a perfect first quarter and a blank second half.
- At the break, the coach can look at the totals. The app also has a Whiteboard for sketching a play. Using it on game day is free on the current site. Saving boards to the cloud is a paid extra. You can skip the board and just record stats.
After the siren
- Finish and save the match so it stays in the team's match history.
- Look at the team totals while you still remember the game. Pick two or three things for training.
- There is nothing to retype into a spreadsheet.
A player who wants their own AFL numbers uses the Players side, not the coach's team screen. See “The player records their own stats” below.
Netball: record the game on your phone
Same app. Same split: coach taps team totals, player taps their own stats.
Before the first centre pass
- On the home screen, choose Netball.
- In Teams mode, create the team if you have not already (sport, name, Save team), or open the netball team you saved.
- Check the roster. Names are enough. Player accounts are optional, and only for athletes 13+.
- Put one person on stats. Give them a clear view of the court.
During the match
- Open the match when the umpire starts play.
- Tap the stat as it happens. Use the labels on the screen. Use + and −. Basic and Advanced are on the same screen for the coach's team totals.
- Undo a mistake straight away with −.
- Quarter breaks are for the coach to glance at totals, not for rebuilding the whole quarter.
After the game
- Finish and save the match.
- The team totals stay in match history.
- Players save their own games separately if they are keeping a personal record.
The player records their own stats
This is a different screen from the coach's Game Day totals.
- The player opens the app and signs in to their own account (13+, with parental consent for ages 13–14).
- On Home, they choose the sport: Football or Netball, or one of the other four.
- They can add a profile under Settings → Player Profiles with + Add Player, or enter a name on a single game.
- They tap + and − on the sport pad for their own stats. Basic and Advanced are on that screen.
- When the match ends, they finish and save. The game shows in View My Stats.
The coach's team totals and the player's personal log are not matched up automatically. The how-to says personal logs are not reconciled to coach totals.
Phone or iPad
| Phone | iPad | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Tapping while you stand on the boundary or sideline | A bigger screen if you are seated |
| Weather | Goes in a pocket between plays | Needs a cover outside |
| Same app | Yes. iPhone or Android | Yes. iPad |
You do not need an iPad. Most volunteers already have a phone.
What it costs
Coaches can run team stats, a roster and invites without paying. The homepage still says Teams mode game-day team stats are free.
Player plans are separate. Guest is capped at 1 game and Basic at 20 games. All Sports is A$4.99 per month and A$49.99 per year.
Paper is still fine for a one-off scratch match, or if nobody has a charged phone. For a season, the app saves the retyping.
On the sideline
- Tap only team totals if you are the coach's stats person.
- Stand where you can see play. Stay out of the huddle.
- Missed a play? Keep going.
- Fix a wrong tap straight away.
- Rotate the tapping job across volunteers so one person is not stuck on the phone every week.
- Do not use this screen to track who has had a fair run of court or ground time. The current app does not track playing time.
What this app does not do
- It does not run rotations or interchange lists.
- The current app does not track playing time.
- It does not log stats by voice.
- The current app does not run Player of the Match.
- It does not live-stream video.
- It does not replace the official competition result. It is your club's own record of team totals, plus each player's own record.
The coach records the team's stats. A player records their own.
